Allied Electronics and RS Components, the trading brands of Electrocomponents plc, the world’s leading high service distributor of electronics and maintenance products, today announced a significant development in the history of 3D design software with the unveiling of DesignSpark Mechanical, a new 3D solid modeling and assembly tool that is available to all – totally free of charge.
Developed in conjunction with SpaceClaim, the leading provider of flexible and affordable 3D modeling software for engineers, the new easy-to-use DesignSpark Mechanical will bring major benefits to design engineers around the world and is available in multiple languages. It is a significant step in the evolution of the DesignSpark online resource hub for the engineering community.

DesignSpark Mechanical, a Free 3D Modeler Derived from SpaceClaim - Desktop Engineering
DesignSpark, the online portal where the free software will be delivered (the page is live, but the free software won’t come till September 16), also offers a large library of readily downloadable components (about 38,000), identifiable by manufacturers, stock number, and more. Allied and RS’s partnership with TraceParts, another 3D content provider, gives software users millions of additional components from tracepartsonline.net
This ought to be an appealing feature to DesignSpark Mechanical users, because they won’t need to create these components from scratch. Furthermore, the automated bill of materials extracted from the 3D model will include all the part numbers, manufacturers, and purchasing info. This is also in the interest of component supplies, as the BOM will eventually direct manufacturers to their online catalogs for purchasing.
Like SpaceClaim, DesignSpark Mechanical can export STL files, which can be used to produce physical prototypes in 3D printers. Since SpaceClaim is a commercial product, it’s reasonable to assume the freely distributed DesignSpark Mechanical will not contain all features and functions available in SpaceClaim. But the preview video (posted here
) shows a robust 3D modeler, with SpaceClaim’s hallmark push-pull editing tools.

Part inspection gets streamlined via new CAD tool - Machine Design
InspectionEasySS is a new inspection product powered by the 3D modeler SpaceClaim. Developed by InspectionEasy, InspectionEasySS uses the Spaceclaim Engineer CAD System, within which all the ballooning and data entry takes place. Engineers can work with drawings in STEP, IGES, DWG/DXF and all other CAD formats to develop an inspection plan. There is a one-button import of all dimensions and tolerances from the model or DWG/DXF drawing into the inspection module, which can post data directly in 3D format and quickly generate first-article reports.
