SpaceClaim and Rhino

Round-Trip Integration

Product stylists require seamless data exchange between surfacing and design applications. They need an affordable and intuitive mechanical design tool to create details and components they integrate into their product designs.  Rhinoceros from McNeel & Associates is a free-form 3D modeling tool. SpaceClaim exchanges 3D data with Rhino, so product stylists can include 3D mechanical design elements in their designs and deliverables. The solution allows Rhino files to be opened directly in SpaceClaim, modified and returned to Rhino in native format.

SpaceClaim with 3DM support provides an MCAD tool for Rhino users.  The Rhino and SpaceClaim integrations lets product stylists create free-form surfaces in the context of the product design.  They can make these precise surfaces within Rhino and accurately transfer them to Spaceclaim.

The round-trip integration between Rhino and SpaceClaim makes it possible for product stylists to use 3D mechanical design elements at an affordable price.  They can open Rhino files directly in SpaceClaim to create solid geometry then send the 3D solid design back to the Rhino file format so they can create precise surfaces.

SpaceClaim and Rhino are naturally compatible and "think alike," offering an environment free of constraints.  The combination also offers precise modeling and a flat learning curve.  It improves the product stylist's workflow by giving him/her more control.  This results in better product designs and faster time-to-market.

SpaceClaim Plug-In for Rhino

The SpaceClaim-to-Rhino Plug-In gives you direct access to a round-trip performance starting with any stored.3dm document.  It provides direct Export from the current Rhino window to SpaceClaim or you can choose "selections:" to export the entire window. You can then edit the document in SpaceClaim, offsetting to create a precise solid, and creating mechanical elements such as ribs, bosses, holes, and reveals.

When you are done, you Import the contents of the current SpaceClaim window back into Rhino, at the exact window or place as the original.  You see two surfaces or solids (old and new) in the same place, so you can compare them and make any necessary replacements.

The Plug-In logo button installs on the Rhino toolbar.  The software requirements are:

  • SpaceClaim 2008, service pack 2 or greater (32-bit only)
  • Rhino 4.0
