Modeling a Vase like Shape in Spaceclaim

    Hi there,

I just came across a modeling challenge I was not able to do. Maybe you experts here can help me. Unfortunately we cannot attach anything to messages here, else I would have included a sample file.

The modeling task is as follows and the object I have in mind looks about like a organically shaped vase or something:

The base is a closed spline on the horizontal sketch plane.

In front and side view, two guide splines each create the shape of the object, so we have four guide splines running almost vertically from aproximately each 'quadrant' of the near circular base.

These four splines' topmost end points are not within a common plane. This makes it impossible to create a sketch that fits them all, but that's not any problem: I select three of them for a sketch plane, create a spline to form the top end profile, leaving the spline's start and end point open and somewhere near the fourth guide spline.

Spaceclaim can move spline points that are outside the current sketch plane, thereby putting them on the sketch. So I go to the sketch that has the fourth guide spline in it, the one that has not yet been connected to the top end profile spline. I grab the two open spline points and drag (snap) them on the fourth guide spline one by one. As they snap into position, the top end profile spline becomes three-dimensionally distorted, though still self-tangential at the location and everything looks as expected.

Now comes the critical thing: How to create a cover surface that connects the planar bottom and the 3D-spline top, following the four guide curves?

    Any ideas?

    Regards,

    Martin

     Hello Martin,

I am having a hard time visualizing this problem here, but I would like to take a stab at it.  You could send the sample file into Support@SpaceClaim.com and I can post images here of the process.  If it is a large file, instead go to http://send.spaceclaim.com and use the form there to send it.

    Regards,

    James

    Hello James,

I sent it to  Support@SpaceClaim.com. The lagest is the screenshot. The Spaceclaim sample file only has 6 splines in it, so it's pretty lightweight.

I think it is a tricky one, nonetheless. I'm on the edge of my seat.

Now I follow.  Here's the play by play:

    1. Open the model.

    2. Go to the Pull tool.  Select the top and bottom loops, then ALT+select the guide curves (you will need to CTRL+ALT+select to pick multiples).

    3. Pull to Blend.

    4. Select the bottom loop again.  Fill to cap the surface.

    5. Enter the Fill tool.  Select the top loop.  In the Options, select Patch Blend, then deselect Tangent extension.

    6. Complete. Voila, you have your solid.

Hope this helps demonstrate how SpaceClaim can help you to quickly generate non-prismatic solids from sketch curves.

    Regards,

    James
